Thanks louche! People say "twins can't have twins." From what you're saying, the chance to have twins is there just the same like anyone else...

I have a friend who has identical twin sisters and has about 5 pairs of identical twins in her family... I know identical twins are just "coincedence" because the egg split but could it be that there's something that runs in families to have identical twins??? otherwise how would one explain this high occurence of identicals in her family?

This has been discussed and argued to death on many 'twins sites' and the consensus is that perhaps the females in the family have a tendency for eggs to split. No scientific backing. My sister in law has two sets of ID twin girls (in a large family). How do you explain that?

After having twins, one has a higher chance of having twins again---is that only by fraternal or identical twins as well?

I would assume that if one has a tendency to drop two eggs, it can happen again. My sister in law has 2 sets of ID twins (in a large family).

I couldn't vote, but I'm here. My twins are 3 and a half. Not sure we'll ever have more kids--- we're extremely overwhelemed because both kids have special needs. Once they're in school full time I have to get my business back up to the income level at which it really needs to be and then we'll consider more kids--- if my kids become less overwhelming someday and our financial situation changes, then yes, I'd LOVE another set of twins.

BUUUURP! Wrong answer. Identical twins result from a single fertilized egg that splits off at the two or four-cell stage. That's why they're identical: they were originally one. Multiple ovulations in a cycle result in fraternal twins, and yes, women who are prone to this for whatever reason will tend to have multiples again. ID twins are a statistical constant across the board in populations, though it is possible that something in the maternal environment encourages splitting and will cause a particular woman to have multiple identical twin pregnancies.

louche- just to stick up for life's great (who I "know" from a few boards so I can vouch for how knowledgable she is) I think she meant her answer as 2 points:
a. that people who produce 2 eggs are likely to do it again
and
b. by the way, isn't it neat her sil has 2 sets of identical twins
correct me if I'm wrong LG.
there is a concept of women having "shaky eggs" (my own loshon) who have 2 sets of ID twins (I personally know 2 with this) in other words their eggs have an unusually high tendency to split at blastocyst stage resulthing in ID twins.

I just joined, and found this subforum. I'm a twin mommy - they are my youngest. B/G twins here - it was a slightly more eventful pregnancy than my others as I had double my usual bedrest - once early on due to a subchorionic hematoma and then my standard 26-28 wk bed rest for pre-term labor. For every pregnancy I had pre-term labor, but delivered @ term or later for all except the twins who were induced early due to baby A not growing.
Having twins is the most amazing thing that has ever happened to me and I thank HaKadosh Baruch Hu for them every day. From the time I was small I have always wanted twins and I used to speak with my grandma about it all the time. She also had always wanted twins and was disappointed that she didn't (they run in the family) - so we used to make up twin names for mine that one would never actually use - like Percy and Persimmon, Clyde and Clive, Hortense and Mortense - and so on.
I think that I gave more and had better bonding with my twins than with my others because I fully recognized how incredibly precious they are and I feel this bond with my grandma - who's no longer living - and I've tried to mother them the way I think she would have.
I did get no sleep and don't think I could do it again without help (I didn't have any help after the twins, minus chesed girls coming for an hour 2x a week).

my girlies are 3.5 now. I would love to do it again, providing I could skip the pregnancy part and the nights for the first three months or so
