I know two women who each have two sets of twins, among singletons.
I know ID twin girls who also have ID twin nieces from their sister.

I always wanted one set of ID twins, but after reading about associated complications with pregnancies and raising them (before Imamother!) I kind of lost my desire. But my 9 year old dd is challishing for twin sibs.

My MIL's father claimed to be an ID twin. But his "twin" brother claimed a birthdate of two years before and a month later (although same day of the month). And no one else in the entire family had or has twins. Is there a test to prove twinness?

Yes, they can do genetic testing to see if twins are identical. Oftentimes, that's the only way you know for sure if twins are actually identical.

Is there a test to prove fraternal twinness? I mean, if they are not even sure they are twins. Probably a stupid question. embarrassed

99% sure that my twins are fraternal...one has blond hair/blue eyes and one has brown hair/hazel eyes!

You can test if people are truly siblings...

I've got one blond, straight haired, blue eyed who's a boy and my other twin is a brown eyed!, brown, curly haired girl. They are so very different from each other Smile

Only if they are ID twins. IIRC, there's no way to prove that they were in utero together, but not ID.

I'm obviously talking about cases where the twins look identical, but aren't genetically so.
I remember reading that Ashley and Mary Kate Olson are actually fraternal twins that look alike.

I know, I was just being silly!

My friend has twin girls that were in two different sacs, two placentas, but they really look close to identical.

Another twin mom here. Boy and girl and as different as different can be! I found it really difficult those first few years. Sure, it was physically exhausting. But emotionally, as well. I felt I didn't have enough private time with each one individually when they were babies. Of course, I tried to steal a bonding moment here and there, but it's not the same as having a singleton (even if one has two singletons that are very close in age). My next one is a singleton.

I also miscarried twins. The pregnancy was extremely hard and at my regular ultrasound the doctor told me the twins had passed away. This was at 16 weeks.
I would do anything to have twins again!!

They can still be identical. If it split very early, they can have two sacs, two placentas, and be ID.

You left out an option for moms who already have two or more sets.

Friend of mine has b/g twins and people ask her all the time if they're identical. Not because they look alike--they're eight years old and are obviously a boy and a girl, which by definition cannot be identical--but because "Are they identical" is a knee-jerk response to being told someone has twins.

You can do DNA testing, but in the absence of a medical or legal need to know, why bother? DNA testing wouldn't prove twinness of frats, but it could prove that both are the children of the same parent.
