I'm not exactly sure how it came up in disucssion, but DD didn'tknow that we uscher the licht "in", rather than making a freakish, dance sort of motion with her hands!

Are you asking why we bring wave our hands like that 3 times before we light?

the reason we wave the hands is because youre really supposed to make a bracha BEFORE doing a mitzvah. but with licht, the minute you make the bracha, you've been mekabel shabbos and can't light the candles anymore. So you wave away the lights symbolically before making the brocha, as if you didnt light yet.

I think SaraG is pointing out the difference between ushering in the shabbos with your hands waving towards you and how some people seem to wave their hands like wax on, wax off but together, kind of like jazz hands.

WHAT are 'jazz hands' and what is 'wax on, wax off'. Feeling culturally clueless here.

jazz hands, I think, is from Fosse (Broadway something or another) and wax on wax off is from the Karate Kid, movie form the eighties. . .sorry for the non jewish reference, but wax on wax off was the only way I could describe the motion.

Jazz Hands from 'wikipedia'. And seeing as it's been, oh, 25 years or so since I saw Karate Kid, I'll take your word for it Wink .

Some women, instead of bringing the light toward them, wave their hands 3x away from them, symbollically spreading the Shabbos light over creation and the world.

I learned that that's why we cover our eyes--to shut out the light, then we uncover our eyes and it's "as if' we just lit. The waving is to beckon the Shabbos in. Why 3 times? anyone's guess.
