depends on whether your pronunciation is Sefaradi or Ashkenazi. If you say Bah-ROOKH AttAH, it's Sefaradi and you'd say Bet Din. If you say Borookh AttOH (AttAW in NYC LOL ), it's Ashkenazi and you'd say Bais Din.

Unless you are an American-born Israeli wannabe who's faking it, in which case it depends on how well you spell Wink

Whoops - guess I should have kept reading. It's also the response to 'mazal tov'. Do I get extra points for that?

"The word Shtuyot - isn't it already plural? So why do frummies double plural?

Shtuyot = Shtus (still plural, just changed to ivris) = shtusim (plural on top of plural - MAKES NO SENSE!!! Can someone please explain this to me??)"

OK, I've resisted asking, but what is it? My DH doesn't know either!

shoteh = a fool
shtus (fem.) = folly, foolishness, nonsense
shtuyos (or shtussim Wink )= (plural of shtus)

on a chassidic note, you might be familiar with the term from the Maamar Basi L'gani where we learn about the related meanings of the word shittim (the wood used for building the Mishkan) and shtus: shtus d'kedusha and shtus d'leumas zeh

Which Basi L'gani is that from?

I know it from Kuntres U'Ma'ayon from the fifth Lubavitcher Rebbe.

Bosi L'Gani Taf Shin Yud, s'eifim gimmel, daled and hey. two other sources are brought down in the footnotes, v'kachah taf reish lamed zayin and kuntres umaayon.

a third and fourth related word is brought in s'eif heh : shot shel hadas. (Kesuvos 17:a) R' Yehuda bar Ilaii would dance with a branch of hadas before the kallah. Rav Shmuel bar Rav Yitzchok would dance with e.g. juggle three branches of a hadas, and R.Zeira said: ahani leh shutei l'sava, v'imri leh shtusei l'sava , Rashi explains that he considered it a shtus; that R. Shmuel was acting like a shoteh., v'imri leh shitasei l'sava (they said it is his shittah, and minhag - Rashi) which was a departure and going higher, a hatayah from the norms of taam v'daas, of kedusha.

in the kitzur at the end of the s'eif:

it explains shtus and hatayah higher than reason, of kedusha, and it is like the removal of hergesh of sechel and midos while receiving nevuah. the Mishkan is from atzei shittim, the transforming of shtus of leumas zeh (kelipah) to shtus d'kedusha. And similarly it is in the avodah of each individual.

battei din (with "t" not "s"), no?

and how could we forget the ever-popular "shalach manos"!!!

and men learn dafim in Gemara when it should actually be dapim

in addition to the Yiddish-Hebrew ways of pronouncing things, there's also the idea of a colloquialism:

An informal words, or phrase of conversational language that brings color to everyday speech and a friendly, conversational tone to writing

I agree with Motek, it's botei din and botei sefer, knesses, etc.

And for the record, I also knew the moadim lesimcha/chagim uzmanim lesason thing. Can I have 500 points? (I learned it from my Israeli cousin.)

Question: What is the singular of dibros (as in the 10 dibros)? Is it dibra? If so, then why do we say "aseres" hadibros, which is masculine, as opposed to "eser" hadibros. If not, then what's the singular?

A bit more obscure...

an animal referred to in the Gemara as a "koi" is, according to R' Adin Steinsaltz, more accurately pronounced "kvei"...though at this point, it's falling on deaf ears...

What in the world does shalashudis mean? Shalosh Seudos - 3 meals?
In Hebrew it is Seuda Shlishit - the third meal. Now that makes sense.

from "Taste of Nostalgia" (nice book from Artscroll!)

"Divrei Emes explains that the first two meals are full meals that one eats when hungry. There is no indication that one is eating primarily to fulfill a mitzva. However the third meal, a token meal eaten when one is not hungry (at least in the winter), is obviously intended to fulfill the mitzva of 3 meals on Shabbos. This indicates that the first two meals were also in honor of Shabbos. Therefore, the 3rd meal is called shalosh seudos because it encompasses all three meals."

AFAIK the singular is dibbur: for example: "al kol dibbur v'dibbur parcha nishmosom." "shamor v'zachor b'dibbur echad".
