I need a baking activity for a 6th grade class that includes the skills used in fraction operations. It should be complex enough for girls this age, but be easy to do in school and not use very expensive ingredients. Any ideas?

Not sure exactly what skills you intend to address, but my first thought would be to give them a recipe and have them convert it to a different quantity. You could adapt the activity for different levels, if you have to differentiate for your student group. For example, for some you can give them a recipe with the amounts in fractions and have them double it, or give them a recipe with only whole amounts and have them halve it (only requires multiplying fraction x whole number). For a higher level you could have fraction amounts in the recipe and have them multiply it by a fraction (e.g. make 3/4 the amount). You can incorporate figuring out equivalent fractions by only giving them certain measuring cups/spoons -- for example, after doubling the recipe they find they need 6/8 of a cup of flour, but they don't have a 1/8 measure -- need to figure out to use 1/4 cup x3.

Good luck, give more details if you want more help :-)

To add to that:
You can also have them in groups and shopping for ingredients. They might have to combine measurements and subtract them from a total (ex. Sara needs 2 1/4 cups of flour, dina needs 2/3, how much of a 14 cup/5 lb bag are they going to use?).
You may also ask them to take it for a full blown series I.e. make a chanuka party using 6 out of 10 recipes for 18 people.
When it comes to fractions and recipes the ideas are endless!

My 5th grade teacher got chocolate bars for fractions. Different bars have different numbers of pieces...
