I was in Boro Park last week and was reminded of a question that I've always wondered about.

How do the boys get their peyos (or pah-yis) to curl so perfectly?? Not EVERYONE has curly hair like that, how do they do it??

I asked my husband. He doesn't know. He says it can curl if you just curl it around your finger after a shower. I disagree. I think maybe rollers, or a hot curling iron. But how often would it have to be done, since it would come undone after every shower! Since we couldn't figure out hwo it's done, I thought I'd post it on imamother.

So here I am. Can anyone enlighten me? Thanks!

Yup! My two cents worth of chaseedishe advice as to curly payos:
Those who have spaghetti hair usually perm their payos - they get a bodywave in them. There are men out there who do this specifically for boys. Then there are the boys whose hair has just enough wave to work with. You can either brush the payos around your finger, using gel generously, and then just let them come off the finger in a telephone wire fashion, or you can brush the payo up, across the forehead and then ever so gradually twirl it down so that it comes down curled.
My son who is 6.5 years old has a natural wave to his hair so making his payos is not a challenge. My son who has Down syndrome has the classic very straight 'Downy' hair so we just keep his payos short, brushed down straight and neat and we enjoy the 'variety' in our family!

My husband has really straight hair so his payos arent beautifully curly, but he manages to twist it long enough until it's spiraly, although not as gorgeously curly as other men's are. My 7 month old son is inheriting his hair from two spaghetti parents so boy will I be in for it when he turns 3 iyh!!!

my husband used to have payos when he was a boy. I asked him the same question, and he said he just twirled them around his finger.

I thought they use small cold curlers. I sometimes see them wearing those curlers behind their ears.

my coworker does a perm. I have also seen curlers.

I'm glad it's not our minhag, it's very feminine IMO.

when I dressed my son as a yerushalmi on purim the store owner told me to use lemon juice. others use sugar water.

you mean, if you put sugar water or lemon juice on straight hair and then curl it around your finger, it will stay curly?!

Yeah, and if you put enough sugar into that water then your kid will attract the entire neighborhood's flies and mosquitoes!

We're not chasedish, so I don't know first hand...

But, the Sheitel Machers here, advertise that they do "Silsul Payos" (Payos Curling) for little boys....
I don't know what their Daddys do though....

Once, a guy came on the bus, and I have NO IDEA what kind of TOOL he was using, but the entire ride (LONG ride!!) he was twirling his payos with this thing.

Everyone on the bus was very entertained!!!!!!!!!!
