How important is a viewfinder?

My adorable 17 month old KEH dropped my camera into the toilet. bye bye camera. It's a no frills canon A590. I need a new camera, just for simple pics and video clips, nothing fancy. the question is, how important is a viewfinder? I can get a camera for 72 dollars on B&H photo without a viewfinder, or one for $129 with a viewfinder. I'd love to save the fifty dollars, so how important is a viewfinder for simple home use?

On a digital camera with an LCD screen the viewfinder is superfluous, because you use the screen for the same function. IMO.

I have a camera without a viewfinder. I think a viewfinder is needed in a hard lighting situation- like very sunny or dark.

I use a viewfinder when it's way too sunny to see the image.
Also, occasionally when the battery is low and the image isn't displaying on the screen to save battery power.

You also have the question of how big this investment is and how long the camera is going to last you. If generally your cameras last a year before someone breaks it, then its less of an investment.
