Dd (3) asked for chanuka itself for about 2 hours straight last night, and was very upset when I tried to explain that I can't just make it be chanuka. Does that count?

I don't think she knows that she's supposed to get presents, she just wanted candles and "sufganiyot cookies" (doughnuts).

My kids don't ask for things yet, except "cheese", "milk", "cereal", and "ochel". I can provide any of those for Chanukah, quite happily!

Hmm, yes, this is a strange concept to me. I thought children only asked Santa Claus for gifts.

Dd2 asked for beigele yesterday afternoon. Dd1 asked for 17 shekels the other day for a workbook she needs to buy for school. Ds3 keeps asking when it will be Chanuka and he can light his chanukia.

They don't get gifts on Chanuka anyway (from us, sometimes chatchas from uncles and aunts). They get some Chanuka gelt - both real and chocolate.

same here shalhevet. never got gifts on chanukah, just gelt to play dreidel and chocolate maccabi soldiers and chanukah chocolate gelt, that was it. its a foreign concept for me too. I thought the gift thing was connected to chrismas, thats all.

I'm glad other families also don't do gifts. My kids know that they can ask for all kinds of dairy foods that I don't normally make and I will try and fit them into the week. As well as doughnuts and latkes.
