I was thinking of filling up my carry-ons with frozen crab sticks and blue ice when I come back from my American vacation next summer...of course, by then I'll be traveling with a baby and my bags will be filled up with stuff for the OTHER crab... Smile

How much in advance can this salad be made? Can I make it wednesday night for Shabbos? I was thinking if I can put together everything besides the avocado and nori tonight and on Shabbos just have to add those in? Anyone did this?

Does anyone know how I can prepare the rice on Friday (or maybe even tonight) and not have it get hard if I want to serve for Shabbos lunch? Thanks!

I made this recipe for this past shabbos and was loved by all - kids and adults. I made the rice on Friday and added the rice vinegar and soy sauce. I added all the vegs right before serving and added a little more vinegar and soy sauce. I did not put in the imitation crab and still was great.

"Any of the Israelis reading this ever find the imitation crab sold here? I would love to try this recipe, but it's not the same with lox...also, is rice vinegar available in Israel?"

Instead of crab, I have used baked salmon with ginger-teriayiki sauce which is found in Israel. It tastes delicious. Often found in stores that carry American products. Rice vinegar is also carried in that same type of store.

Those imitation crab sticks aren't healthy and besides, I personally don't like my kids getting the idea thatcrab is supposed to taste food so we are making something tastle like it.

Does anyone know where I can find this ginger teriyaki sauce here in America because I did not use the ginger and the teriyaki part of the sauce would be good for a little sweetness.

The fake crab is called surimi, IIRC. Not fake crab, at least in my house in the U.S. LOL I don't know why you think it's not healthy: could it be the additives? Sugar? After all, it's made with FRESH ALASKAN POLLAK - isn't that healthy?
The only place I could imagine having it in a kosher version is Meatland. Maybe maybe maybe Tiv Taam would have it, but you have to walk in there backwards and in disguise.
I get rice vinegar easily but not sure what hechsher it is (last bought in Chatzi Chinam but I no longer have the bottle). Eden Teva Market in the Mega in Ra'anana should have rice vinegar in kosher form (they supposedly are all under certification now).

Store in an air-tight bag. Ziploc style.

I'm also curious why the fake crab is unhealthy. It's fish!

I think someone said earlier in this thread that it has nitrites.

DynaSea (the one you usually find in kosher markets) does not.

A couple weeks ago, I took leftover rice from supper, added some rice vinegar and sugar, mixed it up, added a diced avocado, and ate my improv "sushi" salad. Pretty good stuff Smile

I have not made this salad in at least two years now. Erev Shabbos I realized I forgot to buy a roll of gefilte fish for Shabbos. I decide to make this salad. It was delicious. I don't follow my recipe exactly but do follow the general idea. I think using seasoned rice vinegar is far better than plain rice vinegar.

Anyway I just wanted to bump it up to share with others.
