when is a good age to satrt potty training?
also, do you think that it is better to learn to go to the toilet with one of those littl potties on the floor? or one of those things that you put onto the toilet seat for the child to sit on?
my daughter is almost 1.5 and I just have no idea when is normal to start training. I am not in any hurry but was just wondering what people do.

I trained my son at 22 months, but only because he was really truly showing signs of being ready. Meaning, a like 20 months I showed him the potty and occasionally let him run around diaperless and pee on the potty if he wanted to, and he was fully potty trained for the past month, month and a half and his second birthday is coming soon.
But that IS early, I know. I only did it because he was ready; I was not pushing it in any way.
In terms of potty/toilet seat...
I prefer starting with a potty because its easiest to continue doing your thing and have the potty in the room with you while potty training than to need to run to the bathroom every 5 minutes when your kid is first learning but doesnt know how to hold it in...
Also, we have a limited number of toilets in our apartment; I'd rather my son be able to pee/poo on something else and not tie up the toilets when I need it.
So I started with a potty. Then got him used to the toilet seat with steps and an insert.
He picks which one he wants to use now when he has to make.
He learned how to poo on a toilet without a special insert, instead with mommy holding him up, but he really doesnt like to do that; he only does that when we're out and there is no seat and he really has to make.

DS was not ready a year ago at 1,5 but we started talking about it a lot so it got in to his head. We watched movies and played with his baby Shmulik aso. This spring I took off the diapers and gave him stickers for every peepee into the potty or outside. Now he does really well except for the number two which he is afraid to depart from. He request a diaper for it so that he can check it carefully afterwards.
We got both a potty and a ring for the toilet. He alters between the two depending on his mood. I think you should try to take off the diapers and see what happens. Sometimes they just need to become aware of it to get started.
Good luck!

I started training my dd at 6/7 months and bought a little potty that sits on the floor (at this age, she's too small for the big potty).
I would recommend you read http://www.huffingtonpost.com/......html and Linda Sonna's "Early Start Potty Training" book.

I assume u meant 16/17 months?
I trained my boys at 28months approx (2years 4 months). used a potty as it's less scary and less wobbly when they sit. although my DS #2 started to stand at the toilet straight away as he learnt it from his "big brother".
Start training when you think your child is ready.
Put him in underpants (no diaper) and take him to the potty. When he makes (anything, even a tiny bit) give him a little treat (I used smarties). I took my child every 1-2 hours for the first week. then things kinda just get easier.
obviously this is a general statement and some kids will have problems but if you're consistant and positive (don't say "uch" when you clean out the potty in front of your kid - this is a big milestone for them - be happy with him)
good luck and don't expect more a mircle overnight training!

Why? It is pretty common to use dolls to learn by playing. I don't see what's shocking about it.

That's really funny!!! Yeah, then it would definately be a bit strange. We are not playing much with the brit kodesh but water comes out of Baby Shmulik's and that's always a lot of fun. Water in mouth and then water into the potty.

my daughter is almost 1.5 and I just have no idea when is normal to start training. I am not in any hurry but was just wondering what people do. | We tried training at age 2, but I realized that I wasn't ready to train at the time.
So we actually trained when dd was 28-1/2 months old.
I recommend getting a potty first. As Seraph said, it's much easier to concentrate on the toilet training when the potty is accessible in any room. You also have to realize that the first two days, you need to be totally focused on the training. I sat next to dd's potty on the floor and read her books a large part of the day.
I recommend this potty, because it is a 4 in 1. After the short amount of time which we used the potty for, we were able to use the top piece of the potty as a toddler toilet seat on top of our regular toilet. And we used the closed potty as a stool for dd to use to get onto the toilet.
http://www.amazon.com/PRIMO-To.....XKTMA
When we trained, I bought dd two books about toilet training, and used a toy potty and her teddy bear to play and demonstrate while we read.
We bought "Big Girls Use the Potty" and "A Potty for Me". (I change some of the terminolgy when I read the books to dd. She still likes when I read them to her.)
