Has anyone ever had a student who was allowed into the school even though s/he (and parent/s) had not yet been megayer? I find it so difficult! I know daas torah was consulted on letting them into the school, but it still just makes me feel like I might be wasting my efforts if they don't go through with their gerus, since it is not imminent. I'm not talking from a halachic standpoint of what I'm allowed to teach- even just teaching them alef-bais is weird to me! any comments?

All I can say from personal perspective is, behind every ger/giyoret is a great teacher. I assume a rav must have been consulted to allow this child to be enrolled in the school in the first place. As much as I understand you might feel uncomfortable/uncertain about the situation, I hope you can keep as much positive attitude as possible. A student can pick up any negativity/ambivalance very quickly... Kol hakavod.

I once had a kid in my class whose parents were in the process of converting the whole family.

Most of the time it was just fine. I think the most difficult day was the day that we were discussing bris milah. Because the class was 6th graders I usually did not go into the graphic details and assumed that they all knew what I was talking about. Well, halfway through the discussion the boy says "wait, is this some kind of tattoo or something?" OY! So I explained it as simply as I could but the boy still looked horrified!

oy about the bris milah story!! I once had a 2nd grade girl, who has only sisters, ask 'but what do they DO at the bris?'.... I told her it's not such a tznius thing to discuss but maybe she could ask her mommy in private.

thank you for the support on getting the right mindset. hopefully the family will go through with their geirus and I will have played a part in ensuring that the kids have a good outlook on yiddishkeit.
