Go to any wine & liqour store & tell them you're looking for a bottle of dry white wine to use for cooking. If you tell them you need it for cooking, they'll give you a cheaper bottle as opposed to a more expensive bottle that you'd want for drinking.

Wine comes in three colours: red, rose (aka blush) and white.
Each can be sweet, semi-dry or dry. For cooking, stick to an inexpensive dry.
Red goes nicely with red meat, white goes nicely for chicken, poultry and fish.
Go easy with the amount--you're aiming for a subtle flavour.
Popular white varieties are chardonnay (tartest in my view), chablis, sauvignon blanc (some semi-sweet), muscato (quite sweet and fruit, more for dessert or appetiser). Though most inexpensive wine are blend of several types of the above.
You may be able to find a half-size bottle (could be a cork-top or a screw-top). Make sure you keep the bottle in the fridge once opened.

I like to cook with the wine that I'll be drinking with the food. I'm not sure that cheap wine is always the way to go, with cooking.
