How do Pulls Ups help toilet training? When do you use them?

I personally don't think they help. they're just a glorified diaper.
I went straight from diapers to panties with my first. dd#2's daycare insisted I brought in pullups so they could help train her (ie it's easier to have them try and sit on the potty with a pullup on.) well of course after months of this there was no change and I still have to train her this summer.
I think the only use for a pull up is for a long car trip or even early trips outside for a kid that just got trained.

I find them absolutely pointless ... once you're training you want the kid to know to use the toilet and sometimes the first few accidents help along the way for the kid to think - oh this is wet now I know why I need the potty ... but if a pull-up is put on, you might as well use a diaper ...

The same point as the new formulas for after a year - an attemp to create a need that you will hopefully pay money for.

Successful marketing ploy to separate insecure parents from their hard-earned dollars. What "good" parent doesn't want their child to feel good about themselves before they deserve it, etc.

The only purpose pull ups have, when a child is still not properly trained for the night and can go by her/himself to toilet without adult help.

exactly! also for the in between time that a child wants to go to the bathroom but your aren't really training yet. dd always wanted to try when we were out of the house. with diapers it was hard to put them back on again. or you are just begining training and you are out of the house an the child is very likely to make an accident.

We use them with ds - he can make peepee by himself (though doesn't if we're out - at stores, or whatever) but does not make #2 in the potty yet. So, he can pull up and down his pants (assuming they're elasticized) and go potty by himself with the security re. #2. I'm hoping that #2 will come within the next few weeks, but I don't want to push.

I'm not saying I'v never used pullups, but with my most recently trained toddler, I had no use for them. I just don't tape his night diaper too tight and he can pull it down if he need to go. In fact, he usually takes his diaper off first thing in the morning and I have to find where he threw it or remind him to put it in the garbage.

When I had children there was no such thing. If the child isn't trained at night or enough to take out then you didn't take off the diaper at night or outside. We didn't take off outside until very good mastery at home. Then for short trips to friends who they knew and would have no issues that it was a stranger's BR. Everything was gradual.
DD wanted to train herself so she did and some of the boys weren't trained until 2.5. ANd yes, a precocious child has no problem taking off or even reclosing the diaper if his clothes are not restrictive. I was a SAHM and I only put pants on my boys if going outside and dd always wore a dress to make it easy.

I just bought my son training pants. I'm trying to find a day where I can just stay home with him all day. I don't think I'll use a diaper or pull-ups at night. I think pull-ups are too much like diapers which kind of defeats the purpose of potty training.

We used them for outings when there would not necessarily be a restroom readily available, as well as long car trips.
For a child who has been wearing underpants, a diaper may seem like a step backwards or an admonishment of *not good enough* Pullups, which look like underwear, may feel better, psychologically, for the child.
