Homemade Taco Seasoning Mix hi

6 tsp chili powder
4-1/2 tsp cumin
5 tsp paprika
3 tsp onion powder
2-1/2 tsp garlic powder
1/8 - 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
1/2 tsp salt*

Preparation
Mix all the ingredients and store in an airtight container.
3 Tbsp of this recipe is equivalent to 1 packet of the Ortega taco seasoning.
(They suggest 1 packet for each pound of beef.)

*add more salt to taste once meat is seasoned and browned

Really? That's what's in chilli powder?

What is ground oregano, is it available in Israel?
Thanks!

There is no such thing as ground oregano Smile I just don't like the big flakes in the chili powder, so try to grind your dried oregano before you add it to the chili powder mixture.

Thanks so much!
I haven't been able to find taco seasoning (OR for that matter, taco sauce), since before Pesach! Twisted Evil
They are both staples in my house.
Going to make this tonight!

Now, do you also have a recipe for taco SAUCE??

I would guess if you add chili powder to some tomato paste plus water, vinegar and sugar you'd come close.

Oh my gosh ladies. I just realized that the additional 1/2 tsp of salt that I wrote in my original post, was my own addition and did NOT belong in my recipe posting! I feel really bad, because I love salt, and when I give over my recipes I usually don't give salt amounts and just tell people to salt to taste.
I edited the recipe. Please forgive me embarrassed

Just wanted to add that the cumin is pretty important for the authenticity of the taste Smile I can say that after leaving it out all those years I didn't have it for some reason and comparing it to this week when I made the same thing and included cumin. World of difference!

Used this tonight added to black beans to make bean burritos.
Was amazing.

Ha, I just googled looking for something this and this thread came up! My next stop was going to be to post a quest! Does this really taste like the Ortega kind? We liked that in the past but now that I read the ingredients we are NOT doing that anymore, yuck. Is chili powder really the same as that mix you've described? I never got around to buying any but that is easy.

The Ortega stuff is full of garbage. I should have read the ingredients before feeding it to my family in the first place.

It's really good. But I find that with the chili powder it's really important to grind the oregano finely before mixing in, otherwise there's a difference in overall taste and texture. If you can't do that, just use a little oregano to taste.
Feel free to use less cayenne too as it's very strong.

SorGold, there was lots of cumin in there... did you miss it?

I made it tonight, it was pretty good. It did need the salt, ra_mom, just for the record, in my opinion at least. I halved it at first because of your warning but added salt as I ate. It was a little too... something. Maybe I just used too much proportionate to the amount of meat. But overall not half bad. One kid ate it but not as happily as my non-taco ground meat, the other kid didn't. Adults happy enough but easier to please Tongue Out To be fair, I don't remember whether the kids liked the Ortega kind either. I think it did a drop better. Maybe next time I'll just use less of the spices and adults can add sauce for more flavor.

Buy Spice Supreme chili powder. Inexpensive and worth it.
