I'm dealing with a first grader that her mom (that she's very attached to) will be away for approx 2 months or maybe more. She is really not acting herself, she is very spaced out & whiny since her mother left but doesnt kvetch about the fact that her mommy's away. She doesnt even talk about it at all!

Should she be talking to her mom often or rather not cause it'll make her miss mom more?

Should I talk to her about her mom being away & sympathise or just distract her with fun?

any other ideas on how to make sure she comes out of this sane?

If she's not complaining and does not show that she's upset by her mom's absence, leave her alone!

Don't remind her, she will be more upset, rather keep her distracted. I wish that would've worked with my 3rd grader who was just miserable for 9 days straight that Dh and I were away for. She literally cried for the first two days, then called me every single day , sometimes twice a day, sometimes even waking in the middle of the night (US time) to call us, because she knew that in Israel, where we were it was morning!

Why would you keep her from talking to her mother? Of course let her, she loves her and misses her!

you have to do a little of both ... talk to her - be open and understanding ... have her call her mom ... and try to distract her the other times ...
