Nutmeg is generally the spice that's used.

Yes, I agree with nutmeg. Cumin wouldn't go so good with it, unless you're making a spicier (hotter) soup. Butternut squash is sweet and nutmeg goes beautifully with that.

nutmeg if you are going for a more sweet soup (like if you also added honey and are going to garnish with pine nuts or s/t) and cumin if you are going more exotic/spicy

Neither cumin or nutmeg.

I'd go for cinnamon, or allspice for butternut squash. Or possibly a hint of ginger.

Cumin, I'd use for something with tomato base, or roast chicken or rice with sauteed onions.
Nutmeg goes nicely with dairy/eggs or spinach. Goes well with courgettes.

though these are just personal preferences, so you may try to see what you like.

I went through many of the recipes on Recipezaar.com and most of the recipes called for nutmeg, cinnamon, or allspice (or a combo). Many also used ginger.

I definitely think you could use cumin in a butternut squash recipe. I've made a type of stew-like recipe that calls for sweet potato, chick peas, onions, and I season it with cumin, coriander, pepper, and cinnamon. It tastes very good and I think a butternut squash soup would taste very good with this spice combo.

Right, if you're making a sweet version go with the nutmeg.
If you like your butternut squash savory and salty, go with cumin.

Most of the recipes that I looked at were still savory, even though they had nutmeg. When I make butternut soup I add nutmeg, and it's not a sweet soup.

If you make a savory and salty soup, can I have your recipe? I'd love one like that.
