If I'm in the process of potty training my son, should it be an all or nothing? No diaper the whole day, etc? Or can I put a diaper on him when I've had enough? In my son's case, in the past 3 hours, he's peed 6 times on the potty, and another 6 times on the floor. Thats a LOT of times to pee.
Is it totally cool for me to put a diaper on him for me to have a break, or is that backtracking and not a good idea?

I have a feeling your son isn't ready yet....
He's only 18 months, give him some time...

It depends on the kid, in Uriel's case he's young and eager, I don't see any problem with doing a few hours at a time if he's happy about putting on a diaper (I remember you mentioning that he won't keep it on) With Tzahala, she was hard to train (and would hold in for hours on end) and so I had to do it all in one go, with Hallelli, she's really happy to go toilet and potty, so there's no pressure, I don't have a deadline by which she must be trained, so while I'm home I take off her diaper and she goes mostly in the potty/toilet now but still has occassional accidents, however when I put her in underwear she makes in it thinking it's a diaper, so when we go out I give her a diaper, sometimes she makes in it, sometimes she'll tell me she needs to go. I started off with her diaperless for a couple of hours and built it up, and I've had no problems with it at all.

I wouldnt do that but then I wouldnt train a kid so early, I think a lot of times they regress esp if they end up getting a new sibling

I agree with drumjj.
I had the same sitch with one of my kids. They were really interested in using the bathroom, but I was expecting, and didn't feel they were quite ready, so decided to push it off until after the baby was born, which ended up working out great for all of us.

He's 20 mos now, and VERY advanced in lots of ways. He doesnt want a diaper, but after 3 hours diaperless, 6 times making on the potty and 6 accidents (uhm, that much pee in 3 hours? I'm SHOCKED!! and wiped from that many peepees/clean ups, he said he was cold and took a diaper willingly.
If he regresses, I dont mind. But if he's ready, I see no reason to hold him back, especially when he says he wants to pee on the potty, doesnt want a diaper.

usually when they regress though its much harder to train a second time. and yes kids can pee lots till they learn to hold it in.

I don't think 20 months is *that* young. On the younger side, but not that young. Especially if he is so verbal, etc. It's only in the last 10 years or so 3 year olds in diapers is normal. I have a book from about 15 years ago and it talks about 12 - 18 month olds as becoming aware of elimanation through being naked, and 18 months to 2 as a "normal" time to go to underware.
I would leave him in underwear if he's getting it at least 1/2 the time. What are you going to do when you are working? Is that why it's getting too much (running him to the potty every 30 minutes while watching other kids).
Good luck

drumjj wrote: | and yes kids can pee lots till they learn to hold it in. | the thing is, I think he davka starts to pee then holds it in. because he pees a drop at a time, and usually he gets either so excited (bec hes on the potty) or flustered (bec its on the floor) and stops, and 5 minutes later has to pee.

Figured.
Rivka's DCP said once they are about 50% it was okay to send them in underwear. I think if he's going in the potty about 1/2 the time, it's fair to keep him in underwear and bring him. What have you done when the other kids were PT during gan?

If a parent asks me to help them with potty training, I'm agreeable to that- wouldnt LOVE to, but I wouldnt say no either.

The real issue here is just- how long are you willing to train him for.... He might very well be ABLE to train now, but it will take him a while. I did that with my first kid. Or you can wait and train him over a couple of days. At 20 mths, it will be a while.... he will probably have accidents a lot.... I don't really see the point in that. I do believe in training around 2 - 2 1/2, but I have girls (and they say girls usually train early).

I'm in absolutely no rush whatsoever and I dont care if he isnt fully trained for months. I just want to introduce the concept because he seems more than ready.

When he has an accident he says "peepee! Wet!" and I tell him "Next time, put the peepee in the potty" and next time he does.
I think what I'll do now is before baths and after each diaper change I'll give him the option to pee on the potty, but not have him run around naked or near naked. I did that friday and he got sick, so I'm afraid he'll get sick again...

I don't get why everyone is insisting he's not ready. If the kid is begging to make on the potty, and is aware of when he needs to go, what about him is not ready?
