I’ve tired of waiting for books in a series to come out Smile
What are the best fantasy/ magical standalone books you’ve read recently?

Some recents I’ve enjoyed were Night Circus and Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrel, so a similar writing style is appreciated.

Thank you!

The author of Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell also wrote Piranesi which I really enjoyed. It's a very different book (also much shorter).

I don't remember if you are a Brandon Sanderson reader, but in addition to his series, he has some standalone books like Elantris and his Secret Project books that came out last year (most tie into the Cosmere, but while understanding the background will enhance reading, it's not necessary in order to follow the story).

I adore this book (and everything else I've read from Juliet Marillier).

Standalones only, or are completed series good too?

Thank you, I’ll look into these!
There was something about the writing of Night Circus that was so poetic and haunting. I also loved the world building of Jonathan Strange (complete with the academic footnotes). I didn’t know Susannah Clarke wrote other books, I’ll check them out.
Loved all of Naomi Novik’s books (just mentioned them on the other thread). Her writing style is so immersive.
Thanks!

Completed series are good too, but there was another thread on that.
