My baby is 18mo. Hardly has words, even basics like cup, blankie, bye bye etc. Understands a lot but hardly says anything. Has one word that gets repeated non stop, almost like an obsession. Ball. Whatever opportunity there is to say it - anything round, anything circular, randomly. All day. Going on for a few months already. Anyone have experience like this?

I think my son did that too. Balls are a source of great interest.

My son did this with “hat.” He was completely obsessed. BH he speaks a lot now but he does get services. An evaluation wouldn’t hurt, in general the earlier the better.

Having a favorite word is very common for new speakers. But having one word at eighteen months is not typical.

Are you me?

My baby had the same thing! It was ball for months. Only ball. Added hi and bye a while later but nothing else and still mostly said ball. When he turned 2 he suddenly started talking a ton, he says more words than I can count and puts multiple words together.
