Do your glasses turn black after the oil burns and after reusing each night? Or do they stay clear?

They stay clear. We put these inside of it so the fire never touches the glass which would cause it to turn black. https://www.eichlers.com/shabb.....w_wcB

We use those too. They keep the glass really clean since the wick stays in middle and doesn't touch the sides. Before we started using them, the glass did turn black and needed serious cleaning after chanukah.

We also use what was posted above.
But I want to add that if they indeed get back, it might not be worth to clean them. Replacing the cups is not that expensive.

We use smokeless wicks with the metal holders and never had the glass cups go black.

We use these too.
I have a sibling who offially doesn't wash the glasses. She replaces them every year. She says for $ the glasses cost is not worth the hassle it takes to clean.

We also throw away the glass after chanuka. But if it turns black it would be a lot to replace every night.

Add a drop of oil to it and roll until it’s thinner than the hole it goes into

If you have a dishwasher, run them through the dishwasher after chanukkah. They might shatter but they'll be crystal clean

Is it safe to use if they are black?

the black is just soot, it's not dangerous. You can wipe it out. Soot indicates that the flame is getting too close to the glass which could be dangerous.

Some get black, some stay clear- just like my shabbos candles.

On Friday, we had a door open to cool the apartment down because the kitchen got very hot right before Shabbos... it caused the flames to dance all over the place, and the cups did get black.

Usually, there's not too much black, though. I typically wash any cups that look sooty before we set up the menorah the next night (with dish detergent and then wipe with paper towels- that gets them clean enough for us). We replace the glass cups each year.

I am going to try the wick protectors pictured, though, for next year! Great tip- thank you!
