why cant you loosen the straps, fit your child in, and then pull the string so its nice and snug on them? |
Lucky you! It's getting cold here (New Jersey) my kids are lovely and my Husband's housebroken, perhaps you have a spare bedroom for us, let's say - till April!

I'm embedding the videos posted because I believe people will be more likely to watch them if they don't have to go to the youtube site. This is an important topic. If you watch this and still decide to strap your kid in his coat, at least you will understand the risk you are taking.

Thank you so much for posting this! I was completely unaware that I was putting my babies in danger! Last winter and this, DH loosened the straps to fit a coat! I can't believe that I didn't know about this.
Thanks to you, I will let dh know and take those precautions. I'll also remind my family, friends and neighbors bli neder.
Thanks again for enlightening us.

In a nutshell, the straps must be completely tightened to protect your kid in a crash. In a crash, the coat would decompress causing looseness that could allow your child to fly out through the straps. And the most dangerous time I personally drive is in winter with the ice and slippery streets, the season when my kids are most likely to wear a coat.

Do you also take your coat off before strapping yourself in, by the way? |
a small child can slip out of a harness much easier than an adult whose big body is held in by the straps. If you can fit a child in a bulky coat in the harness, that means the straps are too loose and should be tightened so they are snug without any space.
I am not making this up to make your life complicated - I have read about accidents where the baby actually flew out of the carseat because of the coat.

In general, when installing a carseat you should READ THE MANUAL which states very clearly that coats are illegal. Im always amazed when people don't read it.
If there was an accident and a baby got hurt cuz he was wearing a coat, it would be the parents fault.
