I inevitably lose
Every blinking contest I play,
Controlled by the mind,
Too weak to recall.
So I am forced to invade
People’s privacy
I focus in on a famous actress
Ignoring her right to maintain dignity
Even though she has put on 10 pounds.
I Zoom in from a distance
On a man gone astray
But my proof only yields more pain.
My flash blinds
The elderly grandmother
Whose eyes have been fading
Along with her memory.
Against my will
I crop out
Beautiful, ignored scenery
Capturing instead,
A family with false smiles.
Freezing time forever.
Confining innocent bystanders
And forever condemning them
To a fleeting moment.
My sight has been scarred
With images not meant to be shared.
I Shudder
Because I know these images
Have been irreversibly recorded
In my mind’s eye.
