I feel like I learned this somewhere, that after the sin of the golden calf, Moshe Rabbeinu asked Hashem to take away the taiva for avoda zara from the Jewish people, and H' agreed.

That's why its not a taiva for us today the way it was in biblical times.

Does that sound right?

Anyone know the source?

TIA.

Does not sound right.

Many times after Moshe's Petira, B'nai Yisroel sinned with Avodah Zorah.

It wasn't in the time of Moshe, it was much later - I think (but I'm not sure) it was the time of the anshei knesses hagedola. They davenned that the yetzer hara for idolatory and arayos should be taken away. After 3 days no one/ animal was pregnant, the chickens didn't lay eggs etc, so they saw the yetzer hara for arayos was necessary for the world's existence and davenned it should return. But for idolatory it stayed annulled.

It was not Moshe Rabbenu who asked Hashem to take away the taiva for avoda zora, but the Anshei Knesses Hagdolah.

Thanks BD. That is the literal translation. Is that also how that era of Jewish leadership is referred to in English? Is there another, historical term that's used in English?

(BTW...
I'm a BT with a weak Jewish education, and I'm not really familiar with Jewish history, so I really appreciate you explaining this. I need it for a presentation I'm making. )

When the Jews returned from the Babylonian (Bovel) exile back to Israel and the second Bais Hamikdash was built, there was an assembly of 120 Sages. Among them were: Ezra (who was the leader), Chagai, Zecharye, Malachi, Mordechai Hatzaddik and Shimon Hatzaddik. The Anshei Knesses Hagdolah established laws, including the nussach of davening, which we still have today.
