Is there a general rule? Just realized our bedroom is on the top floor and we’re eating in the basement for dinner. Would love to put my baby to bed right after Candlelighting but don’t feel comfortable not being able to hear her if she wakes up.
I have an audio only baby monitor. ( VTech DM111 Upgraded Audio Baby... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00J.....share )

My in-laws seem to think we can keep it on on shabbos. Is this true…?
Can I carry the receiver around?

This is a question for your Rav.

If your camera is only live it’s not a problem. (BTDT)
If it’s records everything it’s not allowed on shabbos.

I see you wrote Audio only.
I don’t think you can carry the monitor with you but set it down in the room you’ll be in mostly.

We were told we can have a monitor on, but we should try not to talk near it. Receiver I don't think can be moved.

This.

Good thing you mentioned not to talk near it.

OP. Do you need to press to talk or it picks up automatically?

I was told by 3 different rabbanim that it's okay to talk near it, but not to use it.

Ie I can say shema with my baby even though dh will hear me from our room through the speaker, but I cannot say "dh please bring me another blanket for baby".

It’s an automatic continuous audio. Don’t need to do anything to hear it. Trying to reach rav before shabbos but didn’t know if it was an obvious answer. Sounds like we might leave it by the baby and leave the receiver by the table Only issue is if we’re going to sleep in the same room…I don’t want people hearing us after the meal…maybe I’ll find another room to put baby in for the night.
