Any ideas that could work for a one day stopover in Zurich? Preferably not far from the airport. So far I've heard of boat rides and the zoo. Anyone been to the zoo and can tell me if it's worth it for three little kids?

The zoo is nice, but really big and alot of walking.
I would suggest the Uetliberg (small mountain in Zurich) with really nice view ( 15 uphill ealk) and a play ground. Usually there's a direct train from Zurich main train station, but right now it's under construction.
When are you coming and how old are your kids? How long is your stop over?

I'm coming in a week with a 4,3 and 1 year old. Google Maps shows Uetliberg 25 min from the airport. There's nothing closer? I have at least 6-7 hours to spend there.
Thanks!

There are about 3 play grounds in the area of the kosher madaan bakery. There’s also a shopping mall about 10 minutes from there called sihlcity.

25 minutes isn't long at all, especially if you have six hours. Just getting to Zurich will take you 20 minutes by train.
I think Uetliberg is what you're looking for. A nice view for the adults and a nice playground for the kids.
There's a small zoo called Wildnispark Zurich, that's cheap (10 francs for adults, kids under six are free) and has a nice playground, but it's an hour ride from the airport and the trains only go once an hour, so it's probably not a great idea.

of course remember to factor in getting in and out of customs/security and the airport itself

The traintracks (S4 and S10) to Uetliberg and Wildnisspark are currently under construction.
Definitly until end of summer, you need a different plan

UPDATE: The trains to Ütliberg and Sihlwald are on normal schedule again, until end of August.
I'd still recommend Ütliberg, there's a cute playground right next to the endstation on top.
And there's a beautiful view and you get a bit of a feeling of Switzerland without traveling to far.
From the Airport it's a direct train to Zurich HB ( main train station) then you have to find Track 21/22 and take the S10, that's it.
Enjoy.

Why is google maps showing that it's an hour ride from the airport?

25 min into Zurich, and then switch trains to S4 train and another 20-25 min to the top
