So that's one I thought I hadn't heard of (love that name ) but I googled it and turns out that it's just the root of the mangold leaves that I use for Kubbeh soup. They don't sell the leaves with the root so I'm not familiar with it. The leaves themselves have a very mild flavor though.

I despise licorice, so anything anise or fennel flavored is right out.
Anise pods look like starfish, so maybe that was it.
