If you were going to wear a black weekday outfit, say a jacket and skirt, what color what would you wear under the jacket?

NOT black! And not navy. Otherwise, anything.

White or pink, if I felt jazzy maybe black and white striped.

My kids have pretty good fashion sense, as in not putting together clashing outfits, but one point I have to drill into them is NO NAVY WITH BLACK!
With the black weekday outfit, try light blue (if it's till in style), or yellow - sounds funny but can look great.

You can do navy with black, brown with black, anything as long as it looks good. It's a "fashion legend" that you can't, according to my designer dad.

It's a bad representaion to go around black and blue. But I don't count light blue.

Nothing wrong with it, if the black and navy in question look good together.

I don't think navy or brown look good with black!

But navy and brown can go with each other.
Funny thing - as a teenager, I was discouraged from wearing black - my mother said it was overly sophisticated. And she said brown was for mature ladies. Guess which colors make me feel put together today?

There are two ways of making black and navy/brown go together.
-if the navy/brown is so dark it looks like a shade of black, and it's a different cloth, it can look very cool and sophisticated
-if the navy/brown is clearly very different from black, just forget what you heard and look at it. It may very well look good.
Sometimes introducing a third colour helps too.
As a teen I had a dress I loved, black and brown, and now I often wear my navy blue denim skirt with a white top or shirt and a black jacket. It looks very good.

Ruchel, I can see brown working with black, but I can't see navy working with black. Bringing denim into the equation is not fair. The world has decided that anything goes with denim!

Ok let's forget denim! lol
Sailor costumes for kids are often black and navy and white (and sometimes lighter blue), is it ok? lol

If I wanted to look conservative I'd wear white or ivory; if I wanted to look festive I'd wear hot pink, bright blue, lavender, teal, or any other vivid color; and if I wanted to look somber I'd wear light grey. If I wanted to look clueless I'd wear navy or brown, and if I wanted to look like death I'd wear black.

on the topic of black and navy. I have been against that combination for yrs now, however I have been seeing a nice mix recently. that is a navy skirt that has a sheen to the fabric with a matt black top. kinda like what ruchel was saying. this also looks gr8 with patent leather accesories...belts, shoes....so it is not a complete no no
in your case I would go with white with a nice beaded long necklace to add some character

For everyday, if you go with a white top, you can add a colored necklace and matching colored earrings or shoes or snood/headband.

In regard to navy & black.
Lately they are doing plenty things, that have both colors on one article of clothing. I think those look great. Otherwise I wouldn't just put on a black skirt w/ a navy sweater or vice versa.

That's my style, but with black. I wear black slinky turtlenecks/ shells under almost anything.
I prefer adding a necklace for color rather than a colored shell.
