At what point do you consider a kid to be fully potty trained? What is your definition of "potty trained"?

Some kids arent night trained until 6, 7, 10, etc...

I don't think night trained plays a factor in being "fully trained"... JMHO.
Or some 11 year olds I know arent "fully potty trained".

uh, that has nothing to do with being toilet trained, there's a difference between one who is a bedwetter, for muscle/emotional/psychological reasons, and a difference between a child who was never night trained fully/well.

fiddle, by your definition my friend's 12 year old isn't potty trained, and her 16 year old wasn't trained until she turned 15.

IMO, when a kid knows he needs to go, takes himself to the bathroom, takes care of his business (even if he needs help to undo snaps or something), and accidents are a rare occasion and not an everyday thing, then the child is potty trained.

We didn't use a potty so for us it was toilet trained.
When a kid stays dry all day, no accidents that's day trained.
When a kid stays dry all night, no accidents, that's night trained.
The kid doesn't have to be able to to it alone though, sometimes a kid can be toilet trained before 2 but still need help with buttons and zippers!

we arent talking bedwetting, which is hereditary. we are talking toilet trained. yes there is a large percent of children who wet their beds due to developmental delay. but im talking about the concept of when a child is able to control their bladder night and day (CHILD) they are fully trained. not to say that one who cant is not, thats a whole nother topic in itself. one like that is known as a bedwetter, not untrained or day trained.

I don't know what percentage of kids over 5 or so who still wet the bed at night regularly, but I would not call a kid who still wears diapers or pull-ups at night "fully trained". Of course, if I had an older kid with this issue, I would not point this out to his face. Nonetheless, I think that this is part of being fully trained. One of my kids was dry at night before being dry during the day, the other was dry at night within a few weeks of being dry during the day. A kid who is reliably trained only during the day I would call "day trained" or "half trained".

"fully trained" is a child that ASKS to use the toilet and is more-or-less dry and almost never makes #2 in his pants. The occasional #1 accident is normal the first year of being potty trained, and the RARE #2 accident is also normal. The main 'fully trained' criteria is if a child asks to use the bathroom and doesnt have to be led to the toilet every 2 hours to prevent accideents.

I'd say the very rare urine accident, but otherwise agree.

Of course, it may depend on who is asking.

If the nursery school asks, *Is Shloimy fully trained,* they don't care if he's night wet, so yes, he is.

If you ask your friend to watch Shloimy so you and your husband can have a night out, and she asks if he's fully trained, then you should certainly mention the 3 times a week night accidents.

If the person asking is the obnoxious woman down the street whose kids can do no wrong and claims each of her kids were trained at 12 months, isn't there something wrong with your Shloimy that he's still in diapers, then of course he's completely trained, even if he is squatting in his diapers at that very moment.

Just trying to figure out at what point to say my son is potty trained. Like how long should he be accident free before the announcement of "he's potty trained"?
Hes not going to be nighttime trained any time soon as he still takes a bottle to bed most nights, so I cant expect him to stay dry at night...

I would make announcements only after a couple weeks of everything being really easy, meaning you no longer really have to think about the issue.

I always considered my kids toilet trained when they were dry during the day.

The interesting thing is that both of my boys became dry at night at the same time, despite being a year and a half apart in age. The older one was still wearing pull-ups 1.5 years after day training, while the younger one was night trained within two months or so of toilet training.

Dry during the day and during the night = fully potty trained.

You know, amazingly my second kid (a boy) also was trained at night very soon after being trained during the day. But it is because looking back, I realized my mistake with my first child, a daughter - she tried to refused diapers at night right after being trained during the day, but I didn't let her, I was too fearful. With my son, when he refused to wear a diaper to bed, I went along, and he was dry that first night! He had several accidents since, but overall it went smoothly after that.
