Has anyone heard of a newborn (few weeks old) who doesn't pass stool often? My baby goes about once in five days if I don't intervene. This is a breastfed baby. I'm so worried because I hear that they should be going a few times a day!

Talk to the doctor! Can you try eating laxative foods to see if it helps baby?

amother when your baby goes to the bathroom is it pellets or is it soft? if it is hard pellets then your baby is constipated and you should drink prune juice and dont give it to you baby

My baby makes very infrequently also since day one. since his stools were soft it wasn't much of a concern but he was pretty uncomfortable and cried ALOT. He had a small hole that had to be stretched by the dr but even after that he didn't make often (sometimes he went a whole week without a bowel movement) The dr had me stay off rice, peanut butter, bananas etc. I drank prune juice and the only one "going" was me. the dr then said I should give him a little water supplement with barley malt or corn syrup and sometimes it worked but I didn't like to give it to him cuz of all the sugar. Everything became a bit better now that he's on solids and eats barley cereal with every meal (never rice or bananas) I also make sure he has some water with his meals in addition to nursing. Sorry for the long megilla but I hope you find these tips helpful. As with every health issue you really should consult your dr. since he may want to make sure your baby is eating and growing normally. but don't worry cuz it's normal and does happen to otherwise healthy growing babies. I guess we should be glad since we have less mess to clean up. Wink

***disclaimer - talk to your doctor if you are nervous at all***

When my dd was around a month she went from several dirty diapers a day to 1 every few days. Apparently that happens to some babies and from what I was told by my dr if they are not hard it is fine. Just beware - the next one may be HUGE!

my dr. told me that constipation in nursing babies is not how often but the consistancy. He said anything thicker than toothpaste is constipated.

Breastfed babies can occasionally end up going only once every few days. If they are not too uncomfortable and are feeding well and the stool isn't too hard, I wouldn't get particulalry worried. May very well be absolutely nothing to worry about.

This is absolutely true... there is most likely nothing to worry about. But be prepared for a HUGE diaper next time.

In any case, though, there is nothing wrong with calling your doctor to ask a question... that's what we pay them for.

its very normal for breastfed babies to only have a dirty diaper once a week!
