How is this done? Is there a specific program for this?

You can use most photoshop type programs to do this. I use Microsoft Picture It and you have to save it in layers. It's a pretty neat way to send pictures. I printed pictures of the grandkids with names so the greatgrandparents could remember the ones far away.
