what would you say is a more age appropriate gift for a 7 yr old whose older siblings got ishuffle ipods, (which is a simpler and more ecenomical cheap version of ipod)
she wants one too but I just don't think it's appropriate for her age.
we did get an extra one because they were on sale for pretty cheap and we figured someone would use it and if not we could sell it but I don't want to rush to give it to her as per the reason I stated above.
any thoughts anyone?
would you give a kid that age such a gift?
remember it's not as whiz bang as the current ipods and it's a lot cheaper

One of my little cousins has an iPod she shares with her brother. Her parents control all content. These days, it has audio versions of Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings on it, plus some kid's music. She loves it.

it's not so much the cost, but it's also the concept.
Isn't a 7 year old a bit too young to have earphones in her ears and have responsibility for such a gift?
a keyboard bubby already gave them some time ago. not such a great one but they don't use it much anyway.
she does have a musical ear.

I dont know if youre a stick in the mud but I would allow that, I have no problem with it as long as they know not to pump up the volume too high in their ears.

if you don't think she is responsible enough to take it out the house, maybe say she can have it, but it stays in her room, with speakers.
I would think a cd player is ok for a kid that age, and this is just an up to date (and cheaper) concept.

Another vote for a digital camera. You can get a rubber water proof smash proof one...

a ds is more then a $100 (even on ebay) and then the games are at least $20 each. an mp3 player can be bought for $20 or $30.

You can get real cameras for $70 or so, and children's cameras for $30

I think I would give it to her. Her older siblings will have one, and getting her something equally exciting but different, probably will upset her. She obviously knows what it is, and most will be able to use them just fine if someone helps put the music on. I have an ipod shuffle, and sometimes let my four year old listen to music on it.
Just my opinion.

I don't think it is inappropriate. It depends on how it is used. We allow my 6-year-old to use our mp3 player. It isn't hers, but we have a lot of content on there just for her. It's mostly Jewish stories and she loves it. Even if she listened to the "adult" content, it wouldn't be a problem, since it is just shiurim and niggunim.

I think you are stick in the mud but you know what I am too and downright proud of it. Why for heaven sake does a kid that age need an ipod. There are so many board games and doll house stuff out there , or is it not hip anymore yikes.
check this site for age appropiate toys trust me ipod is not one of them

thank you all for your suggestions but you've been suggesting some things even more expensive then this ipod. A camera for a 7 yr old? wow the bigger kids will get jealous that's for sure.
tefila those would all be my first choice but unfortunately dh kind of jumped the gun without running this all by me first. He now regrets it but we are kind of stuck since the older ones got theirs already. A board game just isn't going to replace something as exciting as an ipod.
I guess we will just give it to her but I told her I'm taking care of it and I'll let her use it when she wants to. and in the meantime I get to use it too
