(Sorry I had no idea what section to post this in).

I know this is a huge thing on Lag B'Omer. But what about the rest of the year? We want to take our son to Israel for his upsherin. DH says we should do it in Meron. But if it's not Lag B'Omer - and it isn't, it will be in Elul - is there something to this? Is there still something special to do upsherin in Meron the rest of the year? Anyone ever do this or hear of this? We will be staying in Yerhushalayim and my family is in Yerushalayim, so it seems like that would be the place to do it. But DH seems set on Meron.

Yes. We do upsherin in meron not on lag b'omer. It is very special. If you go on rosh chodesh it is more lively.
PM m if you want for details. Smile

We only do ours in Meron and on Lag Ba'Omer. My son turned 3 recently and we're waiting.

That being said, it is absolutely special to do it in Meron whenever it turns out. Last year I was in Meron in the middle of the winter and there was a lovely chalakeh taking place. There is a big chair (Kiseh shel Eliyahu) on the women's side and they had the little boy in it and all the relatives were taking turns snipping his hair and taking pictures eith him. They were passing out cakes and drinks and they sang alot. It was really beautiful. It was one of those special Bar Yochai moments!

Obviously, there are plenty of people who don't go there. I can tell you that for the Chassidim and the Sefardim the kever of the Rashbi is considered special and THE place for a chalakeh.

Maybe the Litvish people here can give you some insight on their minhagim...

Meron is a very, very, very special place.

A boy's 3rd birthday is said to be the holiest day in his life. Isn't that fascinating?

Litvish checking in here.

We made our son's chalakeh in Meron last year on kaf gimmel Cheshvan (on Sunday, his birthday was Shabbos). We actually have an inyan to go to Meron any day of the year EXCEPT Lag B'Omer (because of the balagan, sometimes lack of tzniyus etc).

Our other two boys we made at other kivrei tzaddikim. Kever haRashbi is the second most important place for tefillos in the world. All the tefillos at all the kivrei tzaddikim are gathered to Meron and from there to Maaras hamachpeila and from there straight to Shamayim.

The chalaka was just quiet and special - we davenned at the kever and then dh cut ds's hair at the back. There are steps and a ledge after the back entrance which are convenient for a little boy to sit on. Ds still talks about how he got peyos by Rabbi Shimon - the impressions do really last a lifetime.

Way to go, Litvak Lady!!! I'm pleasantly surprised!

Cookielady, Because the 3rd birthday is such a holy day we wrap our 3 year old in a tallis on the way to cheder so that he doesn't see anything impure. What most people don't know is that we wrap him in a tallis on the way home as well! And many of us keep our 3 year olds in the house with the blinds down till sundown for the same reason.

Marrying a chossid really opened up new worlds to me LOL I didn't know any of this beforehand!

We are very makpid to make the upsherenish on the exact BD if it is a day that is ok (not Shabbos, YT, RC or sefira/3 weeks. I made 2 Erev Shavuos because the boys were born during sefira and after Lag B'Omer. We never do it before the time. Meron is the place of choice if at all possible.

But..

The 2nd (or maybe most) important place for tefillos is the Maaras HaMachpela. I have tons of basic sources (Midrashim, poskim) that all of the tefillos in the world including those offered up at the kotel go up by way of the petach l'gan eden in the Maarah.

We were also told never to do it before a child's 3rd birthday, but no problem to delay it.

That's what I said, isn't it? (though maybe not as clearly). That Meron is the 2nd most important place, and the tefillos are gathered from there to Maaras Hamachpeila, which is the most important. I don't quite know where the kosel comes into this - I guess it's in a category of its own.

Shalhevet, interestingly, in Amshinov if a child's birthday falls on, say, the day after Lag Ba'Omer (or a month or two after) - you do the chalakeh on Lag B'Omer. My son's birthday was Rosh Chodesh Kislev, so we have to wait.

oy, cm I would have gone nuts to wait one day with my boys.

Shalhevet, when I used to do tours in Chevron I would tell people that their tefillos take a right turn before going up.

I'm surprised that nobody else has mentioned how large a crowd shows up in Meiron nowadays for lag b'omer. If your ds is at all afraid of crowds, by all means do it in Meiron - but not on lag b'omer! There are many thousands of Jews that choose that day to visit Meiron and you must walk quite a ways from where the bus will leave you off. (No private transportation is permitted around that day.)

No one mentioned lots of things about lag b'omer because the OP was specifically asking about not on lag b'omer

What I haev heard is that for those whose minhag is to only make the upsherin on L'ag B'Omer it goes by the 6 months rule. If the b-day is up to 6 months before then you cut the L'ag B'Omer before. If it s more than 6 months than you wiat for the L'ag B'Omer afterwards.

It is not exactly our minhag but we were definitely makign DS' upsherin in Meron on L'ag B'omer. His borthday was about a month later so for that month he had a haircut and kippah but no tzitzis.

DS does not love crowds but now the upsherin area is on the side near the kever but in its own area so it was only basically upsherin boys, Tatties and watching mommies. He still plays L'ag B'Omer and wants to go every year now (I used to be able to take the overnight bus and go alone).

You all are making me want to go to Meron for ds's birthday! It's not for another 2 years, but I'm getting all teary eyed reading about how it's the most important day of a boy's life, etc.

That's the rule we go by...

Imaonwheels - I AM going crazy. His hair is curly and unruly. Not long and straight. GRRRRR. But you gotta pick your battles....
