How is that even legal? A poster on the other thread said she needed to males to co-sign for her because she was divorced. How on earth is that legal?

So it's illegal. What's she going to do, report him to the authorities? As if she needs another court case or more community stigma? Obviously she was trying to rent the apartment from someone within our community, not a general apartment building.

It's an attitude like this that helps perpetuate this disgusting behavior.

You misunderstood my attitude. I was not in any way condoning the situation, I was expressing frustration. For the record, I'm divorced.
I know who a woman who went back to an abusive marriage because she couldn't find an apartment. I know another one who had to divorce her abusive husband while still living the same house, which is dangerous.
In my dream world there would be someone in in every town or an organization that would co-sign for a woman in need.

Based on the post that this is a spinoff from, running a language in that comment I am putting a few things together and going under the assumption that the landlord is old fashioned heimish, and that it is not a legal rental.
We’ve had people on this site say that they are landlords, and they also require a certain kind of signature to cosign for a divorce woman. It’s not OK but people don’t see a problem with it and said they are protecting their bottom line.
People who do this will defend it until they are blue in the face and they really don’t see an issue.

Sorry, it doesn't matter if it's a legal rental. Unless it's a commercial building run by a building manager who doesn't care. The legal basement apartments have the same issue.

Sorry for jumping to conclusions. It sounded like you were being blase but now I read it with a tone of frustration. I get what you're saying.

As a woman who divorced and got two mortgages under my own name without any consigners, I would never ever give such a person money. When we women put up with this, is just makes the behavior more ingrained in society.

Dh and I (a married couple with 2 incomes) also needed someone to cosign our lease. The landlord wants to protect himself in case the tenant cant pay the rent. I can see why a landlord wouldnt want to rent to a single person (male or female) and would require a second person on the lease (male or female). If only one person is on the lease and doesn't pay, the landlord is screwed.

I just had a situation like this. For the record, you can report to the authorities and not turn it into a court case, it's just a complaint registered with the county or city. They usually look into, not carefully or anything and they definitely don't take it too seriously, but if complaints pile up against a person or business, they get involved.

People have the same issues with legal apartments. That's not the issue.
A woman who is divorced or getting divorced and in desperate in need of an apartment is the last one who's going to be filing a complaint.
