1st grader dyslexia how much to push?

My son has dyslexia he gets a ton of support at school (Kria 3x a week, English reading support daily), but his tutors are saying it’s not enough and he needs to practice at home. He needs to practice sight words and phonemic awareness and he mixes up b/d and he struggles in general with the longer words in both languages.
The problem is he absolutely refuses. He fights me and fights me and fights me to read at home. No matter how much I try to motivate him. I don’t want to fight him because I don’t want him to associate reading with negativity. What should I do? I’ve tried every motivation under the sun.

I have a child that struggled to read and it took years to figure out what was the cause. I used to try to read with her until I stopped it completely. I would tell teachers and tutors that I would love to read with her but it doesnt work. I am her mother not her teacher. I hired an afterschool tutor.

You should stop reading with him. You need to preserve your relationship with him and his mental health.

Getting the tutors at this age is so important because the further behind they fall the harder it is to catch up. Leave all the reading to the professionals.

This sounds a lot like my son. We did not do homework until third grade. He was so so mentally done by the end of the day that homework became a power struggle I refused to participate in. We had his end of year meeting in 3rd and his reading scores were fantastic.

she wasnt getting so much tutoring in school.
But I think you answered your own question. If he is getting alot of help in school then its too much for him when he gets home. He needs to play. A kid that is struggling to read is working so so hard.

As a mother of a struggling child and as a reading tutor, just don't. The only thing I encourage my students is to read as much as they can. I try to encourage the parents to get them books they like and take them to the library.

Also, there are games you can play that are stress free that help with reading.

Also, first grade is young. Give him time. I understand that they want him to be able to keep up but he will get there in his own time.

You can always do after school tutoring. Kids handle that better.

If everywhere he goes he has to focus on the thing that comes hardest to him, where is he going to feel good?

The school has one agenda and that is for him to learn to read. You need to protect all the other parts of him.

I don't know what methods they are using but dyslexia needs very specific methods of teaching to read. Using an ineffective method will breed extra problems.

Are they using a specific method or just regular tutoring?

Smart mouth is a fun game for phonics/phonemic awareness

I like to make my own Go Fish games with the words we are working on.

He does ok in school I think with them, they don’t tell me that he fights it, but in general he says he hates school and it’s so much work
