(Sorry for the choice of forum - but it made the most sense overall)

Not a name I'm planning on giving to a baby, but a secular Jew recently asked me about the meaning of his name, and I honestly didn't know.

Anyone can help here?

Maybe he's thinking of Lemuel?

The name comes up in Mishlei. He is referred to as a melech, and most peirushim seem to think it is referring to Shlomo haMelech.

Some quick research seems to indicate the name could mean 'devoted to G-D', or, interestingly, could mean 'against G-D'. I'm not sure of the entomology of either meaning, but the second one comes from Jastrow (on Sefariya) and apparently refers to the fact that Shlomo felt he could take unlimited wives without being seduced, thus having views that opposed what was in the Torah.

Is this a first name or family name? If yes there is a Jewish Austrian family name named Lämel.

Lemmel is a real first name. It means sheep I think
There’s a very popular guy in Williamsburg with this name, I wonder if the person who asked you meant him
