What do your teen girls do every night if they don’t have a lot of schoolwork? Dealing with severe boredom.

I had a ton of schoolwork - but not from my High school.

I was taking AP classes and additional college clepping, so that I would be able to finish my Bachlors within the 10 months post seminary.

Most of my friends did that, or had additional hobbies ( like ballet, gymnastics, playing an instrument, art), took courses ( graphics, flower arrangements, sheitals, makeup, sewing) and a lot of just hanging out with friends/ talking on the phone?

Is she not super social?

I find this to be more of an issue with girls who either have few or no friends or have friend(s) who are not phone people or not available in the evenings. Some girls have active family or block situations, babysit, etc. And then their friends who don't and don't have a ton of friends are bored.

There's also the "there's nothing in my closet" phenomenon. Unless she likes/prefers being on her own and/or is really into a specific activity, many girls will not be ok being "occupied" with a craft or whatever when what they want is to be busy with people, either because they genuinely want that or because it's what everyone else does.

She has a chesed job. She reads a lot. I don’t have a big family so it’s not a very happening house. She has friends they don’t live close and it’s not possible to get there and back and they aren’t major phone people. Can’t get to lessons either.

Got it. A few questions:

Do the friends live near each other and she lives further? How far is she? Are they getting together without her? Or busy with their own families or activities?

Why isn't it possible for her to get anywhere? And is it really not possible, or very very difficult?

How many days a week is chesed, and does she like it there? Does she like spending time with other families given the opportunity?

We had to buy away from the center of town. So yes most are close a short drive away from each other or even a short walk. We are a 20 minute drive and it’s just not possible to do. Once in a while I can turn the night upside down but it’s not happening often so it doesn’t solve the constant boredom. She goes once a week to help a neighbor and she really enjoys it. She’s still back at 6:30 and has many hours to kill.

She is very smart and finishes it in class. It’s possible there is a lot of work but she’s very ahead in all subjects.

I teach high school and my principal is always telling us to load on the homework as per the parents’ request! The girls complain but they also complain when they’re bored…

let her teach herself a skill online
play an instrument
crocheting
a foreign language
how to create a website
coding

or take an online class

or she can be baking or cooking one night a week for you

I would look for another helping/babysitting job for another night or two

can she bring a friend home from school one night a wk or every other wk?

Got it. First, if she's bright and likes spending time with families, can she get a homework helper job? She could go daily, and it becomes more a part of her and maybe she stays extra to help or becomes a default babysitter. She has a place she fits that she can get to easily.

Next- when you live in the center of town, you can use the resources. When you don't, sometimes you make them. OP, are you ok with having your not so happening house be more happening? If friends come home with her straight from school a couple days a week and stay the whole evening until someone can pick them up? Maybe dd helps them study, they hang out and have snacks and just be? I've seen girls from farther out still have their house be the place to be because it is warm and welcoming.

Also on the track of making the matzav- can dd start a class for younger girls? Something that your local families don't travel more into town for? Arts and crafts dance, exercise, drawing? You would likely need to give her some space in the house, or she could network for where it could be, but your house would be easier. Even if it meets once a week, she will be busy with it.

And like the homework helper thing (she could also start a steady tutoring business with multiple local kids), she would be productive and feel useful while enjoying. Which is enough to counter the left out feeling and build confidence and her own full life. It makes the empty spaces easier.

Not much hw? How is this possible? Most hs girls I know have so much they barely have a life, and college is easy in comparison.
