They end up getting tarnished pretty quickly and then giving an infection. How can I prevent the tarnish?

Get them replated or buy solid gold earrings.

Try buying gold plated sterling silver. No real way to prevent the tarnish.

You need to purchase gold earrings or earrings that are non-allergenic which are typically made from surgical grade steel or titanium. Some people aren't allergic to silver.
Where are the earrings getting tarnished? Generally the decorative part doesn't tarnish because it isn't getting rubbed or coming in contact with your skin.
Are these wires or studs? You can swap wires for 14 k wires. If they are studs and you absolutely want to wear them you can coat the part that goes through your ear with anti-bacteria ointment which helps for a few hour until your ears start itching because of the reaction to the nickel - it is typically a nickel allergy that is the issue.

You can use jewelry polishing cloths to rub off the tarnish, but if done often, it will rub off the gold plating, too.
I use a lot of gold plated cheap jewelry. Imho the best way to avoid tarnishing from the onset, is to avoid getting the items wet.
Never ever shower or bathe with them. Put them only on when your skin is completely dry. Don't touch them with wet hands. Don't wear them in the rain.

You might need to invest in 14k solid gold.
A small pair of gold earrings will run about $100.

Ok but I’m asking what to do about the player ones I have now. They get tarnished by where they sit in her ear.

This is fairly typical for costume jewelry and many people have an allergic reaction.
If these are the stick type of studs that go through the ear the easiest solution is to coat them with Cortaid or Bactrim and that will let you wear them for a longer period of time.
There really isn’t anything you can do because the metal is reacting from being in the ear and in constant contact with the skin. Also if these earrings are heavy or just dangle they are causing micro abrasions in the hole and just generally irritating the hole.
Many people only wear gold through the ear or buy what are called allergy free earrings. Also many people can’t wear heavy or dangly earrings even if gold.
