Can steroids (prednisolone) make a toddler extremely cranky?
This is my first time ever using steroids. She needed it as she was wheezing extremely bad, even after nebulizer. But since she started on it, she’s been way more kvetchy than usual

Yes, it's a known thing that steroids have behavioral effects.

Have also experienced the unfortunate side effects of steroids when my son was young. Though it explains his behavior, doesn't mean you need to tolerate and ignore all of it though, it's okay to still discipline.

I’ll have to disagree on that.
I’ve been on steroids on a few times due to a condition I have.
I can turn into someone I don’t recognize when on it. Appetite, rage, forgetfulness.
It’s like an outside force taking control.all I need is understanding, support, and space to get through it.
I wouldn’t discipline a child if behavior is a direct side effect. They’re not in control.

Very common. She is probably also hungry, mood swings, not sleeping well, their are many side effects she may not be able to verbalize. Go easy on her for a few days.

As someone who takes steroids regularly not sure I agree with you. Makes it very hard to control yourself and especially with a young child.

My son was not on such a high dose, so I can only speak for my experience. But it's helpful to children, when they do have some measure of control, to know clearly which behavior is tolerated. Of course, if the parent senses that the child has no control, there is no room for consequences for behavior.

Thanks everyone. My toddler is 2 years old. She’s not acting behavioral that needs some disciplining; she’s just extremely kvetchy. She’ll be crying and doesn’t even know what she wants. I offered her to go outside, to sit on my lap, to read a book, etc, she just kept crying. This is so unlike her that I figured it’s either from the steroids, or something physical that we must run back to the dr asap. BH it sounds like it’s from the steroids so I’ll just wait until she’s finished with them and deal with her constant kvetchiness

What is your child taking steroids for? The original issue could also be causing this

Good question - no, his condition did not have behavioral side effects BH. (Rare seizures that had no developmental effect)

Yes, it makes sense. One of my kids had childhood asthma & was on steroids often. It made her so koo koo, she was crying & kvetching all the time.
It makes them irritable & they don't know how to express it other than crying & kvetching.

Insane amount of wheezing and coughing. Just got results back that she has rsv. She wasn’t like this until she started steroids though, even the day before she started when she was wheezing bad and had fever.
