I have a DS19 who I recently had diagnosed with high functioning Autism. He presents with very rigid behaviors. Very little flexibility. He is very routine, showers the same time every day, eats the same meals, the same day of every week at the same time of day. He is a selective eater. He gets very flustered if his routines change. he doesn't make eye contact with people outside the house and has always been socially delayed..He does not like to be around people. When he talks, it is only about subjects he is obsessed with. When he is interested in something lets say Lego or Thomas, he had tons of it when he was younger..now he is obsessed with computers and has a dozen of keyboards, mouse pads and mice in his room. He has sensory seeking behaviors such as frequent snapping of the fingers and sucking his shirts I brought him to a therapist bc he is having a hard time moving on after HS mainly bc he so rigid and despite all that I listed, his therapist doesn't believe he has ASD, he feels its all trauma related from being bullied in school . I don't believe it's all trauma related..I believe he is on the spectrum too..Why cant it be both??

I agree. It could be both. He sounds very classic ASD. Is this therapist experienced?

Thanks, I did..I did the couple thousand dollar testing and he diagnosed him as high functioning ASD..I got medicaid for my son and services from OPWDD based on that diagnosis but the therapist who comes highly recommended (responded to previous posters) doesn't feel like he has it bc my son has a good sense of humor and now that he is comfortable with him , he talks to him a lot so he feels he's very closed up bc of his trauma..I even sent him his report! its just frustrating bc maybe if he treated him as someone who has ASD, he would deal with him differently.

You can have a sense of humor, you can be kind and empathetic and you can still have ASD
Switch therapists. This one is useless.

You can have a good sense of humor, trauma, and ASD so in that sense the therapist is missing the mark. But if the therapist and your son have a good connection and your son is making progress I wouldn't rock the boat. I have ASD and it is so hard to connect with therapists. Don't give a good one up because another might be better.

He sounds like an idiot. None of that contradicts asd. I’d get a new therapist asap.

Does the therapist say that he doesn't have ASD or that ASD isn't the main issue that should be addressed? Because the former sounds impossible. The latter is plausible.

Autistic people are more prone to trauma and bullying. Get a therapist who spealizies in ASD. Sorry this is textbook ASD and if she's unable to see that she probably isn't going to be helpful for your son.

There are so few therapists who understands and are able to treat ASD effectively. Do you know of a good therapist for ASD? If not, wait for a therapist who treats ASD well.
As a side question, who would be a recommended therapist for ASD?

Mom of special needs adult with autism here - these kids can definitely have a sense of humor :-) Your idea of funny and theirs may be different, but that doesn't mean he doesn't have asd. (And your son sounds higher functioning than mine).

If you can pull it off, I'd say let this one work from the trauma angle, especially since your son connects with her, and in the meantime try to add on one who will focus more on the asd piece.
