Hi,
I was offered a very part-time job, approx. 4 hours weekly, doing secretarial/bookkeeping work for someone that works in real estate.
For context, I have about 6 years experience doing similar work and this job is in Monsey.
I was first thinking of asking for 40 hourly, but then realized that maybe it's too little for a job that's this part-time.
I would appreciate any advice on what hourly amount makes sense.
Thanks!
ETA: Also, how would classify the general responsibilities of a bookkeeper (versus a secretary)? What would you expect them to handle aside from accounts reconciliation, A/P, A/R?

I would ask 50 an hour
If you have experience in this field. That being said it might be worth it for this person to use these bookkeeping companies if he has minimal work. So I guess it has to make sense for both of you.

Are you a bookkeeper or have some other degree? $40 is high for administrative work (although obviously depends on job market where you live)

are you doing secretary work or bookkeeping? If I was hiring for secretary work I would pay someone $20 an hour. Bookkeeping I would pay $40/50.

I don't have any offical degree or certification, just a few years of experience. I think people are paid more in general for administrative work in the heimish tri-state communities.

If it's secretarial work, I pay $25 per hour. So that covers administrative basics and the like. For bookkeeping, I pay $45 an hour. In Monsey, for reference. I recommend getting clarification of what the job entails and tell the prospective employer that if it's strictly secretarial work, then X is what you want per hour. Bookkeeping is extra at Y per hour. Leave it up to them to decide what you are being asked to do and that keeps the boundaries in place if they try to ask you for work outside the scope of the position and hourly pay. Good luck!

Both, but mainly bookkeeping.

Thanks all for your replies! I think I'll ask for $45 (as opposed to the $40 hourly I initially thought to ask for) .
Just curious what you all would classify as a bookkeeper (versus a secretary)? What would you expect a bookkeeper to do, aside from accounts reconciliation, A/P, A/R?

Id expect a bookkeeper to be proficient in bookkeeping programs and hold a certificate in bookkeeping and be able to balance all books. To me a secretary is answering phone calls and responding to basic emails.

Side note, anyone that only works a couple of hours per week usually gets paid more per hour than someone doing the same job for 20+ hours.

That literally makes no sense and is not how it works at my firm. Why would I pay someone $50 per hour for 4 hours, when I can have someone give me 8 hours of work at $25 per hour?
Do you pay your cleaning women for the whole day if she only has time to give you 2 hours of work every week?

It may not make sense, but that’s often how it works. There’s no way I’d be getting $53 an hour if I were working full time. I’m only getting that rate because I’m part-time. It could be a frum thing but it’s a definitely a thing.
ETA part timers usually come with more experience as well. So they can technically do the 8 hour work in 6 hours…so it might be worth it.

There are cleaning ladies who take a flat fee (probably more for apartments than houses), which comes out to more money per hour but fewer hours. They don't stretch the time and are usually more efficient.

Something to consider is the business.
If it's a start up or budget is a convern, the likelihood of them paying this much is low.
If its a company that has money/is corporate and needs the work done just not enough for a full time employee, it is unlikely they will take you without more credentials as they are likely looking for someone really skilled who needs no training and can blend into accounting work.
Try to avoid giving a rate without asking them for their budget for the position. If you go to high, they might just say "doesn't work" without an explanation.
You need to know what you are comfortable taking for the work you will do without being greedy. What's the lowest you'd go?
If that number is 30 and you say 50 and they say "we went with another candidate" with no other explanation...it could be you are out of budget. Which is fine. Your work is valuable. But if you needed the money and everything else is negotiable...negotiate first.
But also. Real estate "typically" is a better field financially so feel out first and aim high.
