(Taken from a blog. This family has 4 girls: 5 year old Abbie, who has Down Syndrome, 3 year old twins, Maggie and Gertie, and another girl, age 1.)

I had just picked up the twins from school and we were driving home...

Maggie: Mommy, is school over?
Me: For some kids. Some kids, like Abbie, stay longer.
Maggie: Because she has Down?

(Whoa, I'm thinking, this is totally new.)

Me: Abbie stays longer because she goes to another class in the afternoon, because she's older. But she does have Down syndrome. What do you think that means, sweetie?

(I am dying to hear her answer, just dying. And my question is met with - complete silence. So I help out.)

Me: It just means that sometimes it takes her a little longer to learn how to do some things, like talking.
Gertie: Yah, Maggie. It dust mean dat Abbie can't day, "Dweepy Booty". Dat's all.
Maggie: Yeh, or Cinderella. She just can't say that yet either. That's all.

So, now we know. Straight from the hearts and minds of two three year olds. Down syndrome just means that you can't yet say Sleeping Beauty or Cinderella. I love it.
