We just sent our dd to seminary last year. The cost was around 35k not including airfare.

I know inflation is running wild and I saw that college tuition is up over 70% since 2020.

This was our first child we sent to Israel. Can anyone tell me what the prices were 5, 10, and 15 years ago?

We sent to a slightly modern seminary which might be more expensive, but I'd be interested in hearing the price changes everywhere.

This is painful to read - how do parents afford this every couple of years for multiple kids?!

I went 20 years ago, but it was $12K and I remember it was a big jump from HS tuition (Bruriah) which was $8K

Right. And then after paying a small fortune for a year in seminary we hopefully get to pay another fortune for a wedding and send the next one to seminary.

I went 11 years ago, BY seminary, it was $18,000. But most of it was covered by scholarships, I think we ended up paying approx $5,000 for tuition and then I payed for all my spending money and flights.

I went about 25 years ago and it was $10,000. Paid in three checks of 4000, 3000, 3000. It goes up about 1000 a year. For dd for this coming year tuition is $30,000.

What is insane is that this is conaidered a "need" the way elementary and highschool is.
It really isnt.
At what point will parents draw the line? When tuition hits 38k? 40? 45k?
Time to buck this trend.

ETA I dont want to hear about scholarships. So many many of the middle class dont get scholarships

I went to BY sem in yerushalayim 2012, I think it was 17.5,
I think almost everyone qualified for MASA which I think was 2,500. I know we did and b"h were comfortable, that is not really income base. no idea what they offer today.
Some get credits, and then they can apply for FAFSA/PELL/TAP, all of that stuff. But I think that is more income based.

I sent a daughter 2 years ago, full tuition for her by seminary was $27,500. I'm sending another daughter this year full tuition for her by seminary is $28,000. Both daughters got around $8000 off for academic scholarship. We are middle class and not eligible for masa, FAFSA or anything else (we tried). So tuition alone for each daughter was about $20,000 but then you have to add health insurance, tickets ect. So it ends up costing around $25,000. My kids take their own spending money.

This past year BY seminary tuitions were $25-28K. then there's insurance, phone, clothing, daily expenses, bus, and tix.
Those who get FAFSA and TAP for NYS are lucky.
There was a new seminary this past year, no frills, I think it was $15-18K? Hope they're able to keep up this tuition.

It's only a need if you make it one.

People should stop sending and then the prices would go down. But everyone is scared to tell their daughter no.
