Desperately need to have some main parts of house painted, they haven't been painted in decades and it's really looking awful with damage etc.

Do we need to move out? I have little kids at home. Can we sleep there at night? How long to dry?

some is the stairs, which means no way to avoid little kids going there.

please advise

We didn’t. It’s very fast drying and barely smells nowadays. I did the stairs and rooms kids would go into early in the morning right after they left. So by the time they came home it was dry.
