What should I get my sister-in-law for her 16th birthday? I feel like nothing I get her will make her happy. She’s overweight and is really self-conscious about it. She’s also been depressed and has been talking about how much she hates life. She is getting help but still has a long way to go.
She will not appreciate normal high school girl stuff; like a wristlet, watch, personalized camera/phone case, etc.
Don't say camera because she already has one.
I plan on taking her out to a nice restaurant, but I also want to get her a gift. Any ideas?

Does she have any hobbies? My 16 year old loves it when people gift her supplies for her hobbies because they can get expensive.

Besides swimming, she doesn't enjoy anything.

There are so many cool workshops to do these days, ceramics, resin, tufting etc. An experience together sounds like a lot of fun and might be helpful for her to discover new hobbies and interests.

All the girls I know that age are into perfume and makeup, so a session with a makeup artist also sounds great

I love kiwico.com

Got a six month subscription for my high school sister in law.

They have options such as crafty, electrical, engineer style, scientific

Every month a new box with complete project inside. Very age appropriate based on info you give them.

Maybe get her a bracelet from pandora. It's really fun because you can keep adding new charms to it and can make an outing out of it. Go together to choose a new one for special occasions...

When I was that age and also in that depressive type of space, my sister once gave me a cute little box of cards from hallmark. On every card there was a cute saying on it. Some of the cards said "you are the best sister", "are family is great because of you" and other compliments types of cards. I remember thinking that this is so silly but I really appreciated it. When I was having a hard day I would take out the cards and read it to myself and think that my sister believes in me.
(I have also seen them in calendar form.)
