I got fired today from a company I worked for the past 2 years. I am so embarrassed to tell my parents, in-laws, family and friends. How should I tell them? It’s bound to come up. I’m so sad and upset right now. How am I going to pay my bills? So frustrating.

Been there, it sucks. Wishing you all the best, hold your head high, and don't be ashamed. It hurt like hell when it happened, but now in hindsight I can see that it paved the way to where I am now. When one door closes, another one opens.

Been there, I hibernated for a few weeks before saying anything. But yeah like others said, just say you decided to leave as it’s been too stressful there lately and you’re looking for something else now.

Can you perhaps share with us why?

Can you share how when one door closed another opened? Another one here needing encouragement.

I'm actually trying to get fired from my company. instead they are making me miserable so I should leave on my own and then be unable to collect unemployment. that's what I hear is the norm these days because most companies do not want to allow their former employees to collect unemployment.
its really tough but I guess its better in a way for you.
you can easily say that the job wasn't working out.

I ended up taking a different job with way more benefits and flexibility. Fast forward two years, I moved out of town and was able to take my job with me. Had I stayed in my previous place, I would have had to look for a new job in a new town. They would never allow me to work remotely.

Oy so hard. I know the feeling, my company is hinting strongly they want me to leave, they’d rather not fire me but might soon. Do something for yourself, try to do something nice with the time off. Imagine if you sit around feeling sorry for yourself and then in 3 weeks get an amazing job. You’d think to yourself, why didn’t I just enjoy my vacation? I could have had fun, got things done! So obviously don’t neglect the job search, but try to have bitachon and dare I say even enjoy some parts of it.

I was looking for a job for many months, ended up getting a position at the perfect time, when someone decided to leave suddenly and they needed someone desperately. They otherwise never would have taken me because of my lack of experience, but they were so desperate. It was an amazing job for me, I learned so much. I’m so glad I didn’t find something else in the months prior or I never would have been able to take this opportunity!

Hugs
I remember when it happened to me, I was so embarrassed to tell dh and I cried when I told him
It stung for a while but bH eventually I found something else and got past it
Now the memory doesn’t hurt anymore
Keep in mind- the hurt won’t last forever, tomorrow will be better.

I would do it. Once you say you decided to leave, the next question will be what were you thinking? How come you left a job without securing the next one?
I would say I lost my job due to downsizing.

I’m getting that sense also from a colleague who has seniority and seems hell-bent on trying to make me look bad. I do good work but she’s perpetually unhappy with me. If you don’t want me to work for you, then let me go, but don’t put me in a situation of trying to manipulate me into quitting because you don’t want me to file for unemployment.

Sending you hugs 🫂
File for unemployment, and in the meantime
use the time to organize and get things done. (Better said than done of course)
I would tell people, IF they ask or find out, that it wasn't working and you decided you needed something different.
I wouldn't advertise it, only if someone particularly asks

I dislike the term fired. I would use the term fired when the employee needs to be terminated because he messed up, was a bad worker...
I would use the term "let go" when the employer dismisses employees due to financial reasons. That way it doesn't reflect poorly on you.

OP, if you can just rephrase it in your head whenever you think about it as 'let go', it might make it easier. So many professionals in so many fields are let go each year, for so many reasons.

This is a hard but necessary experience, it's happened to most people, and can ultimately be a really good thing.
Don't be afraid to tell people! You'll be shocked at how much support you'll get from sharing it openly.
May you go on to bigger and better things, with a minimum of pain.
