Hi, I am looking to surprise my husband with a quick weekends away from the New York Tri-City area. Has to be budget friendly 🙂 , and walking distance to a shul, so anything too vacationy or outdoorsy seems to be ruled out. I was thinking about Philadelphia, I think there’s a river and a walk that runs through it, which would be nice for us on shabbos afternoon. Has anybody done a weekend there that could give me some pointers as to where to stay or if it would be feasible Shabbos getaway. Thanks!

We’ve done Philly for shabbos many times.

Can you point me to some places you've stayed at? Walking distance to shuls.

Yes of course. I’ve stayed at both the kimpton and the Wyndham in the historic district. Both are practically next door from Congregation Mikve Israel (who offers catered shabbos meals) Chabad is. A further walk but we’ve done it too

While these hotels are nice, the actual downtown Phili area is full of heavy drug addicts and terrible stenches. Stayed overnight recently and it was a terrible experience. We were extremely fearful walking outside.

I was there recently and that wasn’t my experience at all. Could be because I’m less impressionable (I live in Manhattan) or could be the historic district isn’t the same as downtown Philly. We’re also very streetwise (given where we live) and some unsavory characters wouldn’t deter us from staying in (what we consider) an interesting neighborhood close to all the Attractions.
