can it discolor whites to become other colors?

lots of whites this season, and my boys are big and want white shabbos shirts but they aren't white for long. no pretreating helps to get out ices and chocolate and watermelon stains.

can I bleach white shirts or do I risk ruining them even more?

Assuming they are 100% cotton, they can be bleached.

Keep in mind that bleach is very hard on fabrics so spot bleaching might be a better solution.

For blends or items with trimming or anything elastic, bleach would be problematic.

Some synthetics and blends will eventually turn yellow if bleached with chlorine, in which case use oxygen bleach aka color-safe bleach. White cottons are ideal candidates for bleaching. If the concern is not so much stains but overall dinginess and yellowing, try adding bluing to the rinse cycle or use a detergent with optical brighteners.

BTW absolutely nothing removes the black collar rings caused by wearing a black hat with tefillin. The tefillin shove the hat backwards, where it rubs the collar and works both the black dye and the felt fibers into the fabric.

Some fabrics will shred/rip more easily once they are bleached. I found this out the hard way as a newlywed. Guy at the cleaners told me to stop bleaching DH's shirts as the nap is being ruined. This after I told him DH's shirts were suddenly ripping, and we started going to the cleaners more....

BTW I found out that spraying yellow spots on white with a little oven cleaner (I used easy-off), letting them sit for a bit, and then washing on regular cycle will sometimes save the item - DD's skirt, my Pesach white tablecloth, and the cloth napkins I pulled out to use for Shavuos....

Leaving to dry in the sun also does wonders for stains. Works well for any type of stain but especially on white clothes.
