Book Recommendations

I have a daughter in 1st grade struggling with reading. She is getting extra support and B"H made a a lot of progress this year. It's really important for her to keep reading over the summer so that she doesn't slip back to where she was, but the only way I will be able to get her to practice is if it's a book she really wants to read. She won't practice by reading kiddie books to younger siblings...

Her comprehension level is way above grade level - when I read to her she likes Baker's Dozen, 3 Cheers for Shira - books more for 4th-5th grade - but she is not capable of reading a big book like that herself.

We live OOT so I can't go to a sefarim store and flip through books myself - happy to order online and invest in some new ones for her to read over the summer but I want to know that they are good before I buy them!

Can anyone recommend some simple, easy to read books that have a nice storyline? Not picture books (can have some pictures but just not books meant for 3-5 year olds...) Could be chapter books if they're really easy ones.

Happy to hear suggestions of non-Jewish books that we can take out of the library, although in general she seems to like Jewish books better since they're more relatable for her.

the "I can read" series are great! They go by level so you can choose what appropriate for your daughter

If you have Facebook, you should join the Kosher Books for Eager Readers group.

She might like books by Andrew Clements. Also, the Wizard of Oz is a whole long series of books and many come in illustrated editions.

Oops: sorry, I thought you were looking for books to read to her at her comprehension level.

We have some Amelia Bedelia and Henry and Mudge but these have not captured her interest enough... I think if there are some Jewish books that are a comparable level that would be perfect.

Does anything like that exist?

The Boxcar Children, exciting and pretty easy reading.

Super Shoes is a Jewish easy read.

The Hachai "Fun-to-Read" series is great.

My 3rd grade DD used to really avoid reading. Then her teacher read a few chapters of one of these books and she was hooked. We had the book so she read it herself to find out what happens next.

BH a few months later she is now a real bookworm!
