Do you bake homemade Challah? or buy it?
I rarely buy Challah since homemade is so much more delicios - not to mention much less expensive.

Is this thread number 53 on challah : well for the 53rd time : yep I make most times it turns out well and sometimes it just does not.
Preserverance is the key

I'm not so worried about preservatives (I've never spend to much time worrying about healthy foods, in fact one of the recipes I make uses margarine) I bake, because it feels good... It's been 6 months since I started, and have not been forced to buy a single week since then (bli Eyin Hara) I have a lot of pride in serving only homemade things.

would love to bake, but takes so much time and energy. I'm the only one who always buys? Ok, I did bake about 3x since I"m married (2 1/2 yrs), but I figured I'd be most honest to say I always buy.
I'm in my 9th month, though, and heard it's a segulah...so if I have energy (yeah, right), maybe I'll get to it....

believe it or not, I bake my own. I know I don't come across as the "homebody baker" type so to be completely honest - I trhow the ingredients in the bread machine, and make my husband braid it when he gets home from work. sometimes he throws the ingredients in during his lunch break, and I braid it wheni get a chance. and then occasonally, when we are both stressed out (me school, him work) we buy. but our hommade challah tastes so much better. Does anyone here sprinking a little cardomom in your challah? it is so yummy- try it this week.
I am nursing now so I am not going to fix my typos and grammer - sorry.

Umm, every time I've tried it can be used as a brick for building. Totally a waste of ingredients. From what I've tasted, the bakery ones we can get are always lighter and more flavorful. They are however $4 each and more for chagim.

Considering the bakeries do a booming business in challos, obviously plenty of people buy, and it's not just non jews looking to make French toast.
I'd bake my own IF I had a magic mill or bosch mixer to do the kneading for me. But since I don't...I bake my own maybe once a year, when I can get the kids to do the kneading. The rest of the time--well, the baker needs to make parnossoh, too.

Bakery challos here are horribly expensive and taste terrible, so just about everyone bakes their own.

So far, I bake my own. But since we're only 2 people I'm able to bake enough for a month in one batch.
I haven't baked yet since I gave birth, so we'll see if I'll be able to continue, especially once I go back to work. The last time I baked challah was the day before I went to the hospital to give birth. I mentioned to my husband that I wonder if in a few months we'll be laughing and remember those days when I actually used to bake challah
I would love to continue with this mitzva & I just can't imagine shabbos without warm home baked challah on Friday night. So I really hope I'll manage to keep it up somehow.
I never thought I would be one of those people who kneaded challah by hand. But I went to a challah baking class about 1/2 a year ago, & the instructor mentioned that it's a good time to daven while kneading the challah (by hand). So I started using her recipe and kneading it by hand & it takes less than 10 minutes and is not hard at all. I think it depends on the recipe. My old recipe probably would've been much harder to knead. The one I make now is a much fluffier dough.
Also, since I was making my dough in 2 batches because I couldn't fit a whole batch into my kenwood mixer, doing it by hand is actually quicker for me.

I bake 5 pounds at a time, and seeing that we're just two adults, make small/medium size challahs----- which gives me about 10 challahs plus several small rolls.
Until the baby was born we were invited out A LOT so one batch of challah lasted us for months on end. It's easier to stay home these days, so I guess I will be baking more often. More often meaning once every 6-8 weeks I suppose!
We do buy however when the freezer stock runs out, and I have not had time to bake again yet.

Now that I am starting my ninth month I am going to try to make challah every week. I know this is off topic but can someone direct me to a good whole wheat challah recipe?

I bake my own most weeks. more often than not I use the bread machine to prep it. I also have a magic mill for when I do 5lb doughs.

Oy now I am really embarrassed, and I started that thread too. It's just that I would prefer a recipe that is tried and true.
