W ehave to give many gifts now to non-Jewish people :schoool bus drivers, bank tellers etc.
Do you think they will be happier with cash or with a gift we buy them?
How will we know what each one preffers?

you can give a gift certificate.
it can be kinda hard to know what to buy for a bus driver....
how could you know their taste?
$$ is always appreciated, but could be wasted o bills...

I give Barnes & Noble gift cards, usually, or occasionally Starbuck's.

I have my cleaning woman every other week, for about four hours. We give her a week's salary for her holiday gift.

Paying bills is a waste? Wasted on liquor or ciggies, I can understand, but bills?
Besides, when you give s/o a gift, it's an expression of your goodwill, good wishes, and/or appreciation. How they choose to use it is not concern. $ to pay their bills may be a lot more appreciated by people of modest means than another scarf, bottle of perfume, box of candy or tschotschki that they need like a hole in the head.
I don't like giving gift certs unless I know the person regularly shops at that store. Some stores start to charge a monthly fee if the card isn't used w/I a certain time. Eventually the chrges can eat up the entire value of the card. Stores love these things b/c they make a fortune off ppl who never actually use the card.

a new employee does not get a gift, or certainly not a big one.
